Getting Your Wardrobe Ready For Winter

winter clothes      Now that it’s finally getting colder outside, we can start wearing all of our favorite winter clothes. If you read some of my previous posts about organizing, planning, and shopping for fall wardrobes, then you’re already ahead of the game. But now it’s time to go through our closets again, and make sure we’re ready for the colder, winter months. The reason I like to do this is because there are some fall items that just aren’t warm enough for winter, and some winter items that I haven’t worn yet or even bought.

Today, I’m giving you my system for a quick winter wardrobe update. This will get us ready for the colder months and the holidays which, by the way, usually gives us lots of opportunities to wear all our favorite winter clothes. So, let’s set aside an hour or so, and get our winter wardrobes planned and organized!

WHAT DO YOU HAVE?

    Everything in your closet should:

  • be in good condition
  • be in style and modern
  • fit you right
  • be flattering for your body type
  • be a flattering color
  • work for your current lifestyle

ORGANIZE CLOTHES INTO SECTIONS

Have a different section of clothes for each part of your life, such as:

  • Dressy – Work/Church
  • Nice Casual – Casual social outings
  • At-Home Casual – Comfortable clothes to wear at home with family and friends

ORGANIZE EACH SECTION INTO CATEGORIES

Within each section you just did, put similar items together such as:

  • Pants
  • Skirts
  • Dresses
  • Tops
  • Jackets
  • Coats

ORGANIZE BY COLOR

With each group of similar items, organize by color, from lightest to darkest.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Now it’s time to see what’s missing in your wardrobe that you really want or need for winter. At this time of year, when it starts to get colder, you might want to move your fall transitional items out of your current closet, or you could keep some for layering under sweaters and jackets. I do this, but I put them to the right of my other clothes.

Go through each section in your closet and make sure you have enough of each category for the winter months. You might need to add in or update things from last year, such as:

  • sweaters
  • jeans
  • leggings
  • winter coat
  • winter boots
  • scarves, hats, gloves

MAKE A SHOPPING LIST

After wearing your fall clothes for a couple months, you might have noticed some specific things you need to buy to add to your wardrobe. Write a list of what you need to shop for. If you already wrote a list when you planned your fall wardrobe, this will be a revised list. It’s always good to update and make changes throughout the season, especially this time of year. You might also be able to cross off some things you’ve already bought or no longer feel you need.  Now, prioritize your list according to what you need the most. Be sure to look at upcoming holiday events and get outfits ready for those.

SHOPPING

I know you’ll be busy with the holidays, but this is a great time to get some good deals on the items you just listed. So, plan on being on the lookout as you do your Christmas shopping. Here’s how:

  • Buy a small notebook that fits in your purse.
  • Write down your list of clothing needs, in priority order.
  • Put a dollar amount beside each.
  • As you’re out Christmas shopping in the next couple months, look for things on your list that are on sale.
  • Always keep your eye on sales flyers and coupons.
  • Save time and money buying winter wardrobe items as you’re doing your Christmas shopping.
  • Make sure you buy things on your list and not just because it’s on sale.

Now you should have a well planned and organized winter wardrobe with a handy shopping list ready. If you keep wearing and maintaining your wardrobe throughout the season, you’ll be ready for any occasions and special events that come up.

We all need to save time and be prepared for this super busy time of year. By taking just a short time and going through this process, you’ll feel good about what you’re wearing and enjoy this time with your family and friends.

Please let me know what great winter items you’re buying and wearing this winter.

    Have a wonderful day!
